A sunset view from our place
Well, the sun has appeared on the scene and it seems like it's not going anywhere for the next while. Hopefully we'll get the chance to go and enjoy this beautiful weather. This weekend there is the yearly Santa Claus parade in Vancouver and we will be able to see "Sinterklaas" which means Saint Nicolas. Here's a little bit about the history of "Sinterklaas": For centuries in Belgium and the Netherlands, the 6th of December - and for the grown-ups especially the evening of the 5th - has been a day when nearly everyone is at home, celebrating the birthday of Sint Nicolaas, the kind Spanish bishop. Every year, Sint Nicolaas (also known as Sinterklaas) makes the trip to Belgium and Holland to celebrate his birthday. He has been doing this for ages, not to receive presents, but to give them, especially to the children. A few weeks before December 6th, Sinterklaas officially arrives in Belgium and Holland on board a steamship, dressed in full pontifical - a long, wide, flowing red robe, mitre - and carrying a crosier. He is accompanied by his valet Zwarte Piet (Black Peter) and other servants. To read more please about the history --> CLICK HERE!
Wel, de zon is komen opdagen de laatste week en het ziet er naar uit dat ze nog een tijdje gaat blijven. Het is wel frisjes met zo'n 3 tot 4 graden overdag en rond het vriespunt 's nachts. Dit weekend is er in Vancouver de jaarlijkse Kerst parade en we mogen zelfs Sinterklaas verwachten met de stoomboot. Sinterklaas wordt in Canada niet gevierd en dat kennen ze hier eigenlijk niet, maar in Vancouver is er een Nederlandse club die er voor zorgt dat diegenen die het kennen (vooral emigranten van Belgie en Nederland) het toch nog elk jaar kunnen meemaken. Dus hij komt elk jaar met de stoomboot aan samen met zijn welgekende Zwarte Pieten en de lekkernijen.
